Originally apprenticed to a bookbinder, Bufford had demonstrated his talent for drawing to William Pendleton in Boston and had been hired as a trainee draftsman. Four years later, he joined the Endicott shop in New York, and then worked for another Pendleton graduate, Nathaniel Currier. When his own shop barely survived the panic of 1837, he disposed of all holdings and went north. Once all the artists had been dismissed, Bufford assumed control of production, overseeing the work of the teen-age apprentices and trainees recruited by newspaper advertising.
Ricordi, and many European composers then in London and employed by the theaters there, Boosey had become the sole British agent for Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, Saverio Mercadante, and Giuseppe Verdi, all composers whose songs were in great demand. , and its resources were expended on promotion of the most important catalogue of contemporary music in England.
